Hey everyone,
My first experience with a Topping product: the L70 amp. It uses NFCA technology, supports headphones up to 600 ohm, has 0.2 ohm output impedance, and the gain button adds 19 dB. The front outputs are 6.35, 4.4 and XLR, it works as a headphone amp or a preamp, and the remote controls all its functions. Power according to the company: 7500 milliwatts at 32 ohm balanced, and about 3500 milliwatts at 16 ohm on 6.35.
Who is it for?
- Anyone who needs very high power to drive any headphone, with neutral performance that doesn’t color the sound.
Strengths
- Neutral: it passes on the DAC’s sound with no change or coloration.
- The soundstage widens, sometimes by up to 20%.
- Very high dynamics.
- Zero noise with every headphone, even the Campfire Andromeda 2020.
- You can use all three outputs at the same time, and there’s a switch to turn it off completely.
- An excellent frequency response measurement, and very low distortion according to Audio Science Review.
- From my research, no amp under $500 competes with its power.
Weaknesses
- The company’s numbers are exaggerated: the 9.89 volts was with a DAC, and Audio Science Review measured the amp alone at 3.93 volts.
- The measured dynamic range is 125 dB, lower than the company’s numbers (up to 146), even though it’s excellent.
- Its effect on technicalities (layering, imaging and detail) depends on the DAC and headphone.
Verdict
If you need it, it’s well worth buying, and I think it’s the best value option, even worth more than its price. My advice: don’t trust any company’s numbers, rely on independent measurement sites.
Note: this review is from 2023, so the price may have changed.
