Hey everyone,
AKG is one of the reasons I love IEMs: my first IEM was from them, the one that came with Samsung phones. Today it’s a Bluetooth headphone you can also use wired: the AKG Y600NC. I bought it to review it. A 40 mm dynamic driver, closed back, 33 ohm and 110 dB sensitivity according to the company, and 322 grams. Bluetooth 5.0 (SBC, AAC and UHQ), and about 25 hours of battery with noise cancelling and 35 without. The official price at the time of the review was $350.
Who is it for?
- Bass lovers and bass heads, for music, movies and gaming. Not for monitoring.
Strengths
- Build quality you won’t find in 90% of headphones.
- The sub-bass rumble is scary, the mid-bass is punchy with excellent attack, and I reached 15 Hz.
- The noise cancelling is very strong and doesn’t affect the tuning, and transparency mode is acceptable.
- Volume control by swiping on the cup: a new and nice way to do it.
- Imaging is better in games than in music, and footsteps are clear.
Weaknesses
- The cups are small (50 mm) and I couldn’t stand the pressure on my ears: I take it off every 40 minutes to an hour.
- Soundstage depth is below its price, and layering and micro detail aren’t at the level.
- The mids have bass bleed and sit behind the bass.
- Over Bluetooth the soundstage shrinks a lot and the bass goes up even more.
- The headband padding is thin.
Verdict
It’s not worth $350 to me: at $200 I’d see it as a better fit. My rating was wired with the iBasso DX170.
